When Translation Changes What's Possible
Cross-language conversation used to require shared fluency in at least one language. Now it doesn't. Here are four specific situations where the Translation Room solves a concrete problem.

If you're at A2 or B1 in your target language, real conversation is hard. You can't keep up with native speed. You can't ask for repeats every 30 seconds. The 25 Languages Salachat Supports
Here are the 25 languages currently supported in the Translation Room, grouped by region. Each works as both an input language (what you speak) and an output language (what gets translated for the other person).
European languages (12)
English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Swedish, Polish, Norwegian, Danish, Greek.
This is the largest cluster of supported languages. The model performs especially well on conversations between European languages because of the volume of training data available for these pairings.
East and Southeast Asian languages (6)
Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Malay, Thai.
These languages introduce challenges that European languages don't have (different scripts, different sentence structures, different handling of formality). The model has been specifically tuned for live captioning in these languages.
South Asian languages (3)
Hindi, Urdu, Sinhala.
Hindi and Urdu are mutually intelligible spoken but use different scripts (Devanagari and Arabic-derived). The Translation Room handles both. Sinhala is included for users in Sri Lanka, where it's the primary language.
Middle Eastern and Mediterranean languages (3)
Arabic, Hebrew, Turkish.
Arabic supports modern standard Arabic and most regional dialects, although accuracy is highest on standard Arabic. Hebrew works for both Hebrew-speaking users in Israel and Hebrew learners elsewhere. Turkish covers Turkey's significant Salachat user base.
Eurasian language (1)
Russian.
Russian gets its own group because it has both European and Asian linguistic influences. The model handles Russian particularly well due to large training data availability.

How Real-Time Translation Actually Works
The Translation Room pipeline has four specific stages. Each runs in real time, in parallel with the conversation.
Stage 1: Streaming speech recognition (ASR)
As you speak, your audio is sent through a streaming automatic speech recognition (ASR) model. "Streaming" means the model produces text output continuously while you're still talking, not in chunks after you stop. Most users see their words appearing as captions within a few hundred milliseconds.
Stage 2: Chunked machine translation
The text from the ASR is sent through a translation model in small chunks (usually 5-15 words at a time). The model has enough context to handle short phrases coherently, while small enough chunks to keep the latency low.
Stage 3: Live caption rendering on the other person's screen
The translated chunks appear as captions on the other person's video feed. Captions stream in as the translation arrives, so the other person reads the conversation almost in sync with you speaking.
Stage 4: Optional caption display for the speaker too
You can optionally see captions of your own speech (your real words, before translation) to confirm the ASR is catching what you actually said. If something gets mistranscribed, you can repeat it or rephrase.
The whole pipeline runs in well under a second of end-to-end latency in good network conditions. In poor networks, it may slow down but stays usable.
What Translation Can't Do (Yet)
Real-time translation is impressive, but it has limits. Being honest about them helps you use the feature without surprises.
Translation isn't perfect for slang or very local idioms
The model handles common slang in most languages, but unusual regional idioms can confuse it. If you say something very colloquial, your conversation partner may see a literal translation that doesn't quite match your meaning. The fix is usually to rephrase more directly.
Translation can lose tone (sarcasm, irony, jokes)
Translation models are improving on tone but still struggle with sarcasm and irony, especially when they depend on cultural context. A joke that lands in your language may translate as a flat statement. We're aware. Tone usually has to be carried through the video itself (facial expression, pauses) rather than purely through words.
Translation works on words, not on culture
Some concepts exist in one culture but not another. A perfect translation can still leave the other person confused because the concept itself doesn't transfer. The Translation Room lets you have the conversation; understanding the cultural distance is on you.
Translation latency increases on weak networks
In good network conditions, translation latency is well under a second. In weak conditions, it can slow to 2-3 seconds. This rarely breaks the conversation but does change the pace. If your connection is poor, the conversation feels slower than ideal. Same connection, no translation, would still be slower, just for different reasons.
Even on Salachat's other room formats, real-time translation is available. Wall and Livcam features, which would be broadcast on other platforms, stay 1-on-1 on Salachat with the same translation engine running.
