How Browser Video Chat Works

Step 1: Your browser asks for camera and mic permission

This is the WebRTC standard. The first time you use the Browser Room, your browser shows a permission dialog. Click Allow. The permission applies only to the salachat.me domain.

Step 2: WebRTC handshake establishes the call

Once you click Start and get matched, your browser and the other person's browser do a WebRTC handshake through Salachat's signaling server. This negotiates codec, resolution, and encryption keys. It usually takes 5-10 seconds.

Step 3: Direct media stream opens (encrypted)

After the handshake, your video and audio flow as a peer-to-peer media stream (or via Salachat's TURN servers when peer-to-peer isn't possible). The stream is encrypted with SRTP. Salachat's signaling server doesn't see the media content itself.

Step 4: AI moderation runs on sampled frames

In parallel with the media stream, AI moderation samples video frames every 3 seconds to check for community guideline violations. This is done in a way that doesn't slow down your call.

Chrome 90+ (and Chromium derivatives)

Chrome is Salachat's primary test target. The Browser Room works on Chrome 90+ on desktop, Android, and ChromeOS. Most Chromium-based browsers (Brave, Opera, Vivaldi) also work since they share the same WebRTC implementation.

Safari 14+ (macOS, iOS, iPadOS)

Safari 14+ supports WebRTC well, including on iOS and iPadOS. The Browser Room works on iPhone and iPad through mobile Safari. We've specifically optimized for Safari's media handling, since it tends to be the strictest about permissions.

Firefox 88+

Firefox has independent WebRTC implementation, separate from Chrome's. The Browser Room is fully compatible with Firefox 88+. Some advanced features (like resolution upscaling) may behave slightly differently here, but core video chat works the same.

Edge 90+

Samsung Internet 14+
